One of the most popular aspects of drawing fantasy is the drawing of skulls, skulls can be from the area of tattoo art and over at squidoo there are some lenses about fantasy art, I have created one about skull drawing
I will be going into more detail about skull art and an explanation of why I think this popular iconic image is in high demand.
Skulls can be found on many designs like pirate flags and tribal tattoo designs featuring tribal skull art, maybe the fascination with the human skull could be an influencing design choice for an artist, to see what lies beneath the skin, an almost symmetrical design, except for teeth.
A skull can be placed anywhere in a design, not always at the centre, it could be in the far corner or to the bottom of the design and other compositional elements surrounding it, such as fire or some tribal markings.
Drawing skulls in their many forms also provide a trademark to the artist too, they find that they can identify their art more if they draw some realistic imagery from real life or inspired by real life contents.
When you do a skull sketch, make sure you always retain your own art style as this is why we create as artists to let the world know and relate to our art in some way!
